Freddie Mac: 30-year mortgage rate holds at 7.40%, well above last year's 6.27%

October 15, 2026· Economics

Freddie Mac's weekly survey put the 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 7.40% on October 15, 2026, unchanged from the week before and up from 6.27% a year ago. The 15-year rate was 6.71%.

Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey for the week of October 15, 2026 shows the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaging 7.40%. That is unchanged from the prior week and compares with 6.27% a year earlier.

The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.71%, down slightly from 6.73% the prior week and up from 5.52% a year earlier.

For agents, the year-over-year gap is the useful number: the 30-year rate is about 1.13 percentage points higher than a year ago. Monthly payment estimates built on last year's rates will understate current payments for the same loan amount.

The survey is a weekly average of rates reported by lenders and is not a quote for any one borrower. Freddie Mac publishes a new reading each Thursday.
