The National Association of Realtors says September existing-home sales rose 1.5% from August but were 2.2% below a year earlier. The median price was $417,500, up 1.3% from a year ago, and inventory reached 1.60 million homes.

The National Association of Realtors released its September 2026 existing-home sales report on October 13, 2026.

Sales of existing homes ran at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.99 million, up 1.5% from August and down 2.2% from September 2025.

The median existing-home price was $417,500, up 1.3% from $412,300 a year earlier.

Unsold inventory totaled 1.60 million homes, up 1.9% from August and 4.6% from a year ago. NAR reports the supply at 4.8 months.

The report covers sales of existing single-family homes, townhomes, condos and co-ops closed during the month, so it reflects contracts signed earlier. For agents, the combination of a small monthly gain, lower sales than last year and rising inventory is a market-conditions snapshot, not a forecast for any local market.
